Messy Christmas

'Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not kids nor the spouse.
                                         The stockings were hung o'er the rail of the stair;
The laundry was flung o'er the backs of the chairs.

The dishes grew mellow, the trash overflowed;
Dogs wished to be walked, no matter how cold.
On, Girlie! On, Bella! On, Mack barely trained~
Your human is weary and utterly drained.

The heat is too high, the house is too hot;
I'm going to suffocate~ I kid you not.
                                       The state of the living room causes me pain;
The tree glistens proudly~ 'mongst chaos it reigns.

"We'll straighten it up in a couple of hours
There's sleeping and Facebook and eating and showers."
And so from my house that is perched on an isthmus,
I wish one and all a Jolly Good Christmas!

Weird Stuff That Happens Sometimes

These strangely beautiful pictures were accidentally taken by my cellphone... IN MY POCKET, my front jeans pocket, I guess when I mashed against one of the outer buttons, the camera came up. And snapped pocket pics! They just look like bubbles. How come some of them are light and some are dark I wonder...?
This has happened to Scott before too, and his pictures look pretty much the same as this, like an eyeball or a weird nipple. Yeah some of them look like nipples .. with a dark aureola.. or Saturn .. or like a close up of a metal snap. None of which is in or near my pocket. Has this ever happened with your camera phone? ...
So, here I sit, in front of this computer at 1:00 am and having scraped out the last little bit of Nutella out of the jar, my mind starts to think of things-REALLY weird stuff that has happened to me before. Things that just blow my mind whenever I think about them.
Here's a couple of things that happened to me several years ago, back in Austin. These things stay fresh in my mind, because they are just so astonishing. I am not sure I can convey the weirdness of these events, but I'll try.

                                                         THE MISSING KEYS
One time I couldn't find my car keys. Here, I can't quite remember exactly how long my keys were missing, but I did have to dig up an alternate set. I took the girls to school. That was a trip that consisted of about one major hill, some bumps over the Lamar Bridge and numerous turns and a curved exit, a round trip I made twice that day and every day. Anyway, at some point I was in the driveway and happened to walk past my car and spotted the Hello Kitty keyring- sitting on top of the car on the passenger side between the rear window, and where the trunk starts, were the missing keys. Absolutely nothing was holding them on there. I have no idea how they stayed on my car. Even just stopping or starting at lights it seems like they should have slid off.
The car didn't even have good shocks. They would scrape metal every time I'd hit a bump or a pothole.

                                           RUSH HOUR ENTERTAINMENT
I always have my cup of tea with me. Nowadays I have a porcelain tumbler with a silicon snap-on lid and a sippy-hole that fits nicely into the cup holder. That day, several years ago, I just had an oversized coffee mug.
Driving from our house toward South Lamar took one huge hill and a series of sharp turns, high-speed merges, and some red lights. The traffic as usual was hectic until all 3-4 lanes came to a standstill at the light before the Lamar Bridge. Bumper to bumper, waiting.. when someone yells HEY, THERE'S A CUP ON YOUR CAR! And OMG my big coffee cup on the rear fender still has my tea in it, I have not spilled a drop. It was astonishing.

                                         AMAZING PHOTO COINCIDENCE
Shortly before we decided to move away from Austin, we rented a friend's house at Lake Travis. The lake was low, and not expected to rise much, but it was understood that the house we were staying in was occasionally put completely underwater about every 25 years. A flood house. It was a cute little house, built of cinderblocks with cool 50s chrome and porcelain cabinets. While we were there, we bought an Airstream, it was brought there from somewhere else. That trailer was full of old rotting junk and mostly just trash. When we cleaned it out, there were some old slightly water damaged Polaroid pictures, from the 80s it looked like- of some cowboy people and 2 of the pictures were of a flooded place.. and on closer inspection, it was plain that the photos were taken of the very place we were living -while it was under the water! You could see the top of the swing set sticking up above the water and the trees and other points that matched up.. IT WAS THE VERY PLACE  THAT TRAILER WAS TO BE TAKEN TO YEARS LATER!!! Think about it. Weird huh? Scott asked the people we got the trailer from about it, and they said they had no connection with that place .. they said "Oh, they had just randomly driven around after that flood and took some pictures."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
One of those really weird things happened today. We were going to buy some paint to finally finish the outside of the house with, and they didn't seem to have the paint chip in there on the little sample cards you know.. and we stood there awhile and kind of argued.. He wanted to get someone to look up the code and mix it, and I said If they don't even have the chip, and the right kind of paint, then we are waiting.. and of course that's how it went.. since I walked away, and he followed.. LOL.
I was worried that maybe that color was no longer available- I had no idea where at home I might have put one of the paint chips that I had kept, and I was kind of wondering how I was going to find it.
Meanwhile the checkbook was in my purse because the one check we wrote in at least 2 years was needed today to buy a 1951 jeep truck for another restore and sell project.. and then I asked him when we got home if he had the checkbook, because he hadn't given it back to me. He pulls it out of his coat and there is something tucked inside. GUESS WHAT. It was the paint chip card, FROM MORE THAN A YEAR AGO, MORE LIKE 2 YEARS. INSIDE THE CHECKBOOK. >insert twilight zone music and narrative by Rod Serling here<
It hadn't been there before. It picked it up out of my purse (okay, BUSTED- I never clean my purse out) I didn't know it was in there. I could have thrown that checkbook in about 3 different compartments in there but the one I chose happened to have that paint card and that checkbook happened to pick it up in my purse and come out right when we were needing it.
How weird is that?

Just Another Creepy Story

Marilla Penn in front of Penn Castle (lower left)

Very soon after we had moved in to Penn Castle (we stayed for 2 months while waiting to close on the 30 acres we purchased) something happened that freaked us out bad!!!
Of course we were on our guard already, it was the biggest scariest looking house we had ever BEEN in, much less get to LIVE there for any length of time! It was creaky and dark and cold. That was the year it snowed in May. So we were all kind of camping around the antique furnishings in this huge place, and kind of kept to one or 2 rooms besides the ones we slept in, so as not to mess up anything, and the computer was set up in a nearly empty sitting room. It was in between Shanna's room at the top of the kitchen stairs and our master suite at the top of the front stairs, and the 2nd floor bathroom was right there in between 3 rooms, so it was a convenient central place to have the computer. I remember having to sit on the floor and the computer was in a deep window sill. The walls were 2 1/2 feet thick in that house!
And so we were hanging out on that room kind of late one night, around 11:00 pm, too late for visitors, when we hear KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. A definite knock. My heart stood still, and I looked at Scott and we were frozen staring at each other- this rush of fear in my ears, then KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK omg I about had a heart attack, I was frozen in place and Scott got up and went to see who was there, he went down the stairs through the scary front room to the door, and opened it... and.... NO ONE WAS THERE. He came back up and said no one was there, then KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK- LOL! THAT time he was near the doorway and it was coming from our bedroom...
...ready for this? You sure?
It was the stupid cell phone, that somehow got set to this ridiculous "knock knock knock" ringtone.. and we had gotten some text messages.
It doesn't have to be a real ghost to get one's blood pumping, under the right circumstances.

More Ghost Stories

The Crescent Hotel

Since it is finally starting to feel like fall around here, I am in the mood for ghost stories and exploring some more of my unique area of the world. I'm still determined to make the Ghost Tours this year, at the Basin Park Hotel and at the Crescent! I really want to do this and I'm pretty sure I want to try and stay a night in the Crescent. With my camera and my laptop, I would certainly get no sleep! I will search out the haunts all night, taking photo after photo... well , here I am lost in my mind already.
The Crescent has been many things in its illustrious past. Which can all be Googled, so I won't bore you with every minute detail of its history- but it was once a Women's College.
Bowling League

The Crescent is best known for Dr. Baker's Cure though. Here's a good account of Baker's doings: CLICK HERE
And a really nice summary in this blog about the Crescent Ghost Tour. Clickety
I did learn that the swindler, fake-doctor Norman Baker only operated his cancer hospital there for about three years, and was already being investigated over his fake hospital in Iowa. He was eventually sent to Leavenworth prison for four years, which was a mere slap on the wrist for a guy who hastened the death of  hundreds of trusting cancer patients with excruciating treatments. Those few years of pain and misery and death left quite a mark on the atmosphere of the hotel.
Before that Baker was a vaudeville magician who performed with a Miss Tangley, and he happened to invent and produce the Air Calliophone, a calliope operated more efficiently with air. I know the owners have a few grand old calliope organs in the lobby, but I did not know that Norman Baker made these things! Further exploration and investigation needed here! I also know that at the time about 2 years ago that the present owner's husband Marty was killed in a car crash, they had been on their way to pick up an 'organ' from somewhere up north.. I don't know if the organ was purchased and brought back or not. Here are some pictures I found relating to Norman Baker's Calliophones:
Baker Made His Calliophones Here
Oh yeah, and Baker also had his own radio broadcast 'dissing' the American Medical Association and other   entities, which stirred quite a controversy. Here's a photo from his radio station. The photo below said that isn't Baker, but I beg to differ...

Marvin Lucke? Looks like Baker to me. Just sayin.
This is Baker

Above photos all borrowed from Google

There are many things about the Crescent that have impressed me, and I have felt the weird energy every time I enter its doors. I get just under the roof of the carriage entrance, and it starts every time- goosebumps - like all my skin is electrified. It stays with me until I am out of there.
Once when I was showing our daughter Charleigh the hotel for the first time, we went upstairs and both of us just STOPPED; I believe it was outside of 218. We saw movement in shadows under the door. We definitely felt something and it was freaky having another person sharing it!!! We clutched at each other and ran away! LOL! Later we learned about that being a haunted room. (The one where Michael, the construction worker, fell to his death from working on the roof, landing in room 218)
I took pictures in the hallways and in the middle of a lot of 'normal' ones there is a dark one. The flash was on and the lights were on in the hallway, but in that photo there is a heavy darkness. A maid later told me that a dark form follows them sometimes and they don't like it. I won't even get into the maid's stories. There are even a few faint orbs in here. Other pics have clearer orbs. No, it isn't dusty in there.
My Photo of Dark Hallway near 218
Last time we were in there, Scott and I both were in the little area just inside the door from the top balcony that overlooks Eureka Springs. There are restrooms there, and a bench. Well, inside the hotel the main hallway was quiet, but when we stepped through that doorway to that area, there was the sound of roaring whistling wind- violent wind!!!! When we stepped away and stepped back in again, it was like turning the volume up and down. It was surprising to us to open the door to the balcony outside and have it be a calm, quiet, sunny day. Because right inside that door sounded like a tornado!!! I went into the restroom but nothing happened.
Old hotels are fascinating.. so many people have been in and out.. some leave "baggage".
The Driskill Hotel; Austin TX

Once with some friends in the Driskill Hotel in Austin, we rode the elevator. There was a bellhop operating the elevator. He was a middle aged black man, with a red vest, and a portly belly. He chatted to us about if we had seen ghosts or not. Our friends who had a room there said they hoped not!!! He laughed, and said if we were interested, they had ghost pamphlets down in the lobby at the front desk. He was very friendly and charming.
Later when we went down, no one was operating the elevator. We went to the front desk and requested ghost pamphlets, only to be met with a strange look, and to be told that they no longer had those pamphlets, but did have them several years ago. We asked about the bellhop. There was no one of his description working at the hotel, and they had no elevator operators.
While we were having a drink at the bar, we saw him walk past. He smiled and waved to us. I wish we had followed him. That was the afternoon of a night at Antone's when our band was opening for Jimmy Vaughan, so we didn't have much time to pursue ghosts.
But one weird thing is when we discussed that incident later, Scott had a completely different description of the elevator bellhop than mine.
The Courthouse in Eureka Springs
Another strange thing happened to me at the Carroll County Courthouse in Eureka Springs. It was during the trials and depositions and court appearances with the evil one who wished to harm us.
I went downstairs to the restrooms. The beautiful wooden stairs are noisy. I clacked down to the lower floor, saw a woman at the desk and brightly flourescent-lit offices through the windows behind her. I don't recall exchanging a greeting or any words with her- I was in no mood to be chatty. I went in and used the restroom, thinking of the evil one following me in there and killing me the whole time. I washed my hands and exited the restroom. The outside door to my left opened and a man walked in. This time there was no one at the desk or in the dark offices.
I turned and went up the stairs and he also was going up the stairs behind me, about 6 steps below me. I heard him. He was there. I opened the door at the top and turned to hold the door for him.... and guess what!! Nobody there.
I think that's all I have for now.

Why My Husband is so Cool

One reason why my husband Scott is so cool is because he can still laugh over something that happened in the early 1990s. He can LAUGH at this. That signifies that he is cool.
We were in the middle of a hot steamy really-into-it moment, if you catch my drift...
I was thirsty and had a big ole glass of ice water. FULL of ice water. I reached over him to grab it and ...yes... KERSPLOOOSH!!!! ICE WATER!!!! ON HIM!!!!!!! and the bed and well, lemme just say that the moment was gone, and things cooled off real quick.
God bless him- he did not kill me. He didn't leave me. He didn't even get mad. It was so shocking, yet we laughed. And laughed and laughed!
There. THAT's why I love him.

Old blogs

I copy and pasted from my other blog, pictures and all-  so I hope this works.

~fascinating old photos~

I was looking at one of my favorite old photo sites – http://old-photos.blogspot.com/ and saw these photos of the Happy News Cafe.

Blogger says “I am surprised that by the “No Smoking” sign. I guess they were ahead of their time.” I agree.
diner
Happy News Cafe in Washington DC. Blog says “Interesting that the sign on the door on the left says there is a ladies dining room upstairs. I am not sure why women would be seated separately at this time.”

“The picture above shows Elder Michaux working the cash register. Eldoer Michaux was a very early black evangelist, who  was the first black person to host a TV show.”
There is a sort of mystery surrounding these photos of the cafe. Was it a charity soup kitchen type place, and of so why are the customers in the photo dressed so nicely? Go to the blogsite for the whole story and to see the enlarged photos.

Message for All Household Members

I don’t mean to be so serious, but seriously! Nobody around here seems to understand the gravity of the situation. It may be partly the fact that it doesn’t deem important enough to the one(s) I plead with, get upset to myself over, exasperated with, and just plain losing respect over. It IS a big deal- …to me. If you, or someone you know, are a member of a household, this message is for YOU.

Look, In order to facilitate goodwill at home we need to be aware of a thing I like to call Ten-Second Acts ‘o’ Thoughtfulness.
The idea here is that there are many small thoughtful things that one can do that make running a home so much smoother that it would shock you how much of a remarkable difference it could make on how we regard each other at home, and how we continue to get along well. Some of these things may include spraying cleaner inside and swabbing out the toilet occasionally. Cleaner and brush are kept conveniently next to the toilet, 10 seconds! Changing the roll; less than ten seconds maybe, but OH what joy it spreads! Now you probably get the idea. It is fun to do little things around the house and see if it can be done in ten seconds. FUN I say!!!
Now, obviously I felt compelled to compose this article for a reason, that reason being that one or two of my own household members have and continue to have a couple of very annoying habits to the one who has to do most of the everyday cleanups. I have apparently no hope of changing them or their annoying habits, so in order not to go off the deep end, I do things like compose articles warning others about the consequences of not heeding my warnings! Heed!
Simply, if you want to make Mama or anybody else you care about at all happy then please, PLEASE just take your dirty dish to the sink, run a little water in them at least, if you are too busy or unable to wash the dish yourself. Things like that. Things Mama MUST have nagged at you about in her own way. Nagging did her no good either.
If you would like to help the people in your life, just please give this simple Ten Seconds ‘o’  Thoughtfulness idea a thought. Do it for the ones you love.

Osage burial mounds on our property?

The picture’s real hard to make out. Traditionally the Osage Indians (they
lived here) buried their dead on high mountaintops and they believed
that if the sun shined on the funeral, that spirit would get to pass on
to a higher place, but if the sun didn’t shine on the funeral the dead
was to be reincarnated as an owl and fly the forest forever (we have
owls) Hooty hoot.. I thought it would be a good idea to be buried up on
the west mountaintop (which is legal to do here). I kind of entertained
the idea that the Indians used it for burying since it is the highest
most accessible mountaintop. Haven’t been up there in 2 years so today
we went and saw all the tree damage from the ice storm. We walked the
fence line and I noticed all these mounds on the other side of the
fence, this is just one of about 10 I think I saw. They’re on the west
side of the western mountain, so that would be sunsetty right? From the
top we can see her farm. Snicker. Hand me my telescope. There is a
panoramic mountain view up there. There are gnarly old trees that were
marker trees from when the Indians tied twigs down so the grew pointing
at springs. I posted photos of some on an earlier entry.
